lake turkana
& chalbi desert
10 days trip
810 km / 85% offroad
This is an adventure of a lifetime. You will ride in some of the most remote areas in Northern Kenya. We shall pass through nomadic areas to the Jade Sea also known as Lake Turkana. It is the world's largest permanent desert lake and the world's largest alkaline lake. We shall also ride through the Chalbi desert.

The desert is believed to have been a lake that dried up a thousand years ago therefore the name Chalbi, which means 'bare and salty' in the Gabbra dialect.

This adventure is not over until we get to the Samburu National reserve, rich in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species.
Day 1
Arrival to Nairobi
Pick up from the airport to the hotel.
Nairobi - Nanyuki 200 km

After breakfast we shall go by car to Nanyuki town on the slopes of Mt Kenya.
We will find the bikes at the hotel and the mechanic will help us with the setup such as suspension to ensure all riders are comfortably riding during the next days of offroad adventure.
Nanyuki - Kimanjo - Maralal 200 km
The adventure on bikes begins on this day. We shall leave Nanyuki towards the Laikipia region through an area well known for its wildlife conservancies and ranches. We shall have our picnic lunch on a nice spot along the way and continue to our next hotel at the top of a hill in Maralal town.
Maralal – South Horr – Loiyangalani 233 km
We will get up early for a long day of riding. From Maralal we hit the road through nomadic land crossing sand rivers (locally known as Lugga) and on to the semi arid area of South Horr. We shall pick a good spot for a picnic lunch and keep riding until you start seeing the Jade Sea (Lake Turkana) We will decent to the town of Loiyangalani on the shores of the lake. The first sight of the Loiyangalani area gives you the sense like you just landed on the moon.
Loiyangalani / Short Ride / Local Activities 60 km
This will be a relaxed day. We shall take a short ride the El Molo tribe village and learn their way of life. The El Molo tribe is the smallest tribe in Kenya. El Molo people live in small villages on the southeastern shore of Lake Turkana. They are believed to have originally migrated down into the Turkana Basin around 1000 BC from Ethiopia in the more northerly Horn region. Owing to the arid environment in which they entered, they are held to have then abandoned agricultural activities in favor of lakeside fishing.

There will also be an option to take a boat to the South Island National Park that is ideal for bird watching and has one of the world's largest concentrations of crocodiles.
Loiyangalani – Mt Kulal – Loiyangalani 180 km
After breakfast we take a day trip to Mt Kulal an eroded-down extinct volcano located in northern Kenya, just east of Lake Turkana. It is among the highest peaks in northern Kenya and represents a unique ecosystem surrounded by arid and semi-arid lands on all sides. Call it a green Mountain in the middle of the desert. The mountain ecosystem captures moisture in the forms of mist and rain and provides important hydrological services for the entire region.
Loiyangalani – North Horr 95 km
This will be a shorter ride compared to the previous days. We will arrive in North Horr and head straight to the dunes. You will have fun riding on the Chalbi desert and gauge or improve your sand riding skills. Later we shall head the mission where we will spend the night.

After lunch we shall go to relax by the swimming pool managed by the mission and has a bar with cold drinks.
North Horr – Marsabit 200 km
We shall ride across the last part of the Chalbi desert through Kalacha and over night in Marsabit; a cool town in Northern Kenya. This will be our last day on the bikes.
Marsabit – Samburu
This day we will drive on a Safari jeep to Samburu National Game Reserve.
The reserve is rich in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species. We will check in at a luxury tented camp set in the spectacular backdrop of the Mighty Ol Olokwe Mountain fronting Ewaso Nyiro River.

We shall stay in tents that are spread out along the shady banks of the river under a thick stand of doum palms. After lunch we shall head out for an evening game drive.
DAY 10
After breakfast we shall head out for game drive before heading back to the camp for lunch and relaxing. If we are lucky we shall spot wildlife from the comfort of our rooms as they come to drink from the river.
